My carpet got wet should I pull it up myself or call a local carpet shop first?

It depends on how wet and how long it's been sitting. If it's a small spill or leak caught within a few hours, blot up as much moisture as you can with towels, get airflow onto it (fans, open windows, or aircon on dry mode — handy given Sydney's humidity swings), and avoid walking on it until it's dry. Don't be tempted to just leave underlay wet "because the top feels dry" — that's exactly where mould gets started, especially through a humid Sydney summer.

If it's from flooding, a burst pipe, or the water's been sitting more than 24-48 hours, don't try to save it yourself. At that point the underlay is almost certainly compromised, and in older Sydney homes and units (especially ground-floor and older-style buildings around the Shire and inner west) there's a real risk of mould getting into the subfloor. Pull the carpet back yourself if you're able to check underneath, but call a professional for extraction, drying equipment, and an assessment of whether the carpet and underlay need replacing rather than just drying.
